Cat Litter Box MOQ Explained: Why 20 Units Is the Smart Starting Point

MOQ is the first number every buyer asks about — and the one most factories won't explain honestly. Here's how minimums actually work, tier by tier.

The short answer

  • Sample first — evaluate build quality before any commitment (we ship samples in 3–5 days).
  • 20 units — a low-risk trial order to test your market, at our catalog price of $80 EXW.
  • 200+ units — bulk pricing unlocks and custom packaging is included.
  • 500+ units — full OEM/ODM: custom molds, colors, logo, and exclusive designs.

What "MOQ" Really Means

MOQ — minimum order quantity — is the smallest order a factory will accept. It isn't a made-up gate; it exists because of two fixed costs that don't shrink when you order less:

  • Tooling & line setup. Switching an injection-molding line to your model takes real time — heating the barrel, swapping the mold, re-checking tolerances. That setup cost is the same whether you order 5 units or 500.
  • Materials. ABS resin, motors, sensors, and circuit boards are bought in batches. You can't buy resin for a single unit at a sane price.

The MOQ is simply the point where those fixed costs spread thin enough that the factory doesn't lose money on your order.

Why Two Factories Quote Completely Different MOQs

The same litter box can be quoted at 10 units by one factory and 1,000 by another. Here's what's actually driving that gap:

  • Catalog model vs. custom. If you take an existing design with no changes, the factory can piggyback on their current production run — MOQ stays low. Any customization forces a dedicated run.
  • Who owns the mold. A factory that already paid for the mold charges you only marginal cost. A factory that has to build you a new mold will fold that tooling cost into a higher MOQ.
  • Where you are in the value chain. Trading companies quote higher MOQs because they add a margin on top of the real factory's minimum.

The MOQ Ladder, Tier by Tier

This is the tiered path we walk buyers through at MetaPawtic. It's designed so you never overcommit before you've proven demand:

TierWhat you getWho it's for

How to Test a Market with 20 Units (Without Burning Cash)

20 units is enough to learn what actually matters, if you're deliberate:

  • Test the thing that kills returns. Before volume, confirm the two things that drive litter-box returns hardest — motor noise (under 40dB) and odor sealing. Get real customer feedback on both.
  • Validate the unboxing. Your buyer's first impression is packaging and the quick-start card. 20 units reveals whether your branding survives shipping.
  • Price your margin honestly. At $80 EXW plus freight and Amazon fees, map your landed cost before you scale — see our Amazon sellers guide for the full math.

MOQ Traps to Avoid

  • The "low MOQ, high setup fee" bait. Some factories quote a tiny MOQ but bury a one-time setup or tooling fee. Ask for the all-in landed cost, not just the headline minimum.
  • MOQ that excludes accessories. Confirm whether the MOQ applies to the full kit — charger, app activation, spare parts — or if those carry separate minimums.
  • The trading-company markup. A "factory" quoting 500-unit minimums is often a trading company adding margin. Ask for a live video walkthrough of the floor — a real factory will do it on the spot.

Our Numbers, Stated Plainly

Here's the MetaPawtic MOQ policy in one place, so you can compare us against any other quote:

  • Starting MOQ: 20 units on catalog models (enclosed 55×50×65.5 cm, 10.9 kg; open-top 55×51×53.6 cm, 8 kg — both for cats 1.5–12.5 kg).
  • Price: $80 EXW per unit at trial quantity; bulk pricing from 200 units.
  • Lead time: 45 days typical, sea freight Ningbo → US West Coast in 15–18 days.
  • Certifications included: CE, FCC, RoHS pre-certified; UL and KC available for US and Korea.
  • No hidden setup fee on catalog models — the mold already exists.
